Best Restaurants in Cape Town 2024: Foodie Guide

Cape Town Foodie Guide 2.0 is back! Back in 2021 I released my complete Cape Town Foodie Guide, but the Cape Town foodie scene is ever changing and I have since discovered even more fabulous spots for you to try out. I have also recently updated my original guide so be sure to browse it here: Cape Town Foodie Guide. Here are some of the restaurants I’m loving in Cape Town at the moment: Cape Town Foodie Guide 2024

Cape Town Foodie Guide: Breakfast and Brunch Spots

Egghead Diner, Kloof Street

Egghead Diner has to be my favourite new Cape Town Foodie discovery. I think I’ve been back 3-4 times which is unusual for me because I tend to prefer trying new places. But the porkey bun at Egghead has coaxed me back on mutliple occasions. Egghead is all things eggrolls. The decor is mustard yellow, 70’s diner style, the egg rolls are greasy with bright yellow runny yolks and your coffee is served in exclusively yellow mugs. It gets a 10/10 recommendation from me!

New York Bagels, Harrington Street

New York Bagels is affordable, aesthetic and the OG bagel spot in Cape Town. There’s no denying Cape Town has become bagel-obsessed in the past couple of years. I am no exception to the trend and love a classic cream cheese & smoked trout combo. New York bagel really is the original, starting up years ago before bagels were on trend in Cape Town. Their coffee is deluxe, their prices are so affordable and the shop is covered in Plantify plants.

Stellski, Bree Street

Stellski is the perfect inner city working cafe. Their beautiful layout incorporates an indoor courtyard surrounded by working spaces and tasteful art deco decor. They have their own exclusive coffee blends and their food is top notch. We had a smoked trout bagel and a Nature’s Delight Toastie which were both insanely delicious! They also have a branch in Woodstock which is also super cute.

Lazari, Vredehoek

Lazari is a down to earth neighbourhood cafe in the heart of Vredehoek. They’ve been going for years but have recently revamped their menu to “Cape Mediterranean” style. The decor is lovely, the service friendly and their menu contains flavours from Greece, Lebanon, Tunisia and Egypt. It’s a lovely mid-week work spot or great for a slow Saturday brunch.

Kleinsky’s, Sea Point

Kleinsky’s bagels in Sea Point is an absolute institution. The bagels so fresh and delicious. I’ve only ever bought the fresh bagels from the bakery counter and taken them home to eat but the sit-down options also look super deluxe.

Kanela Café, Sea Point

I recently discovered Kanela Café and it is such a gem! Located on Regent Street in Sea Point, Kanela is a wholesome breakfast/brunch spot serving up wonderful healthy foodie options within a beautiful retro building. Plants everywhere and a warm fireplace for the winter time, Kanela is lovely spot. I had the pulled mushroom gyros and it was so divine. It was so beautifully done and honestly tasted like it could’ve been lamb so props to Kanela for pulling off this vegetarian version so well!

Arthur’s Mini Super, Sea Point

The king of all sandwich shops! Arthur’s Mini Super is such a quirky and fun spot in Sea Point. Arthur’s will make all your sandwich dreams come true from chicken parmas to every toastie combo you can imagine. Bright red, with a retro flair, Arthur’s Mini Super also has a mini bar on Wednesday-Saturday evenings and speciality groceries.

Korean Kitchen, Sea Point

When I say I haven’t stopped dreaming about the meal I had at The Korean Kitchen back in 2022, I’m not exaggerating. I had the Teriyaki Chicken with kewpie mayo & nori and wowza! They offer traditional Koren BBQ, lunch box combos and plenty of other delicious dishes. The ambience isn’t the best best and there aren’t too many tables but the food is so worth it!

Yen’s Vietnamese, De Waterkant

Yen’s Vietnamese has fast become a family favourite. The decor closely resembles that of the traditional Vietnamese restaurants you’d find in Hoi An and Hanoi. The food is absolutely spot-on and truely reflects the tradional Vietnamese cuisine, making a trip to Yen’s feel like far more like a trip overseas than a mere lunch outing. Their traditional iced coffees (with condensed milk) and bahn mi are the stars of the show. but everything on their menu is divine.

Lello’s Deli, De Waterkant

Lello’s Deli is an authentic Italian Deli nestled in the ehart of De Waterkant. They stock all sorts of delicious imported Italian goodies but the star of the show is their focaccia sandwiches. Made freshly each day, Lello’s sandwicches boast divine combinations of mozarella & parma ham, slow roasted prochetta or caprese with tomato, caprese and basil. Using nothing but the freshest locally sourced ingredients, their sandwiches are really divine. They are pretty pricey though coming in at around R125 per sandwich. Finish off your meal with their famous pistachio cornetto – an italian citrus pastry filled with creamy pistachio mousse. Lello’s deli is run the family who run Scarpetta in Woodstock (they’ll be featured in the dinner section!).

Laced Coffee, Rosebank

Laced Coffee was started a few year’s ago by the Paul Roberts, husband of the famous wedding dress designer, Robyn Roberts. The beautifully decorated garden cafe serves as a wonderful accompaniment to Robyn’s designer studio. Grab a coffee, a breakfast bagel or some lunch after your dress fitting or even have your bridal shower here. Laced Coffee is not just for future brides though and has become a popular study spot for university students as it is located close to many residences in the Rosebank area. It’s the perfect peaceful spot for a study session, a catch up with a friend or a wedding planning session with your bridesmaids. Their Billy Bagel with salmon, cream cheese, capers and red onions has to be my favourite bagel in Cape Town. It just hits the spot! The staff are all so friendly, warm and welcoming.

Cape Town Foodie Guide: Snacks

Ditto Ice Cream & Waffle House, Kloof Street

We LOVE Ditto. So much so that we actually took some of our engagement shoot photos here. Ditto started up a few years years ago serving the most divine vegan oat m*lk based ice cream. Check out my Best Ice Cream in Cape Town Blog here.
But last year they expanded to become a full blown ice cream & waffle house. They have a gorgeous sit-down area with a plant wall and freshly cut flowers on display. Ditto serves up the most deluxe waffles. You can build your own waffles picking your ice cream and topping of choice or choose from their signature combinations.
And now for the biggest plug: Sunday Ditto x Labia Movie deal. For R160 you get 2x labia movie tickets to see any movie and you get 2x waffles with 1 scoop of ice cream + 1 topping. That’s only R160 for both of you for the perfect Sunday date! To redeem the deal you need to first go to Ditto and order your waffles of choice and pay. Ditto will print out a receipt which you can take across to the Labia to redeem your 2 movie tickets after you’ve enjoyed your waffles. If you’re keen to upgrade your waffle choice to one of their signature waffles you can pay R200 and get 2x signature waffles and 2x movie tickets. Definitely pop this on the date night bucket list!

How’s Your Oni?, Greenpoint

How’s Your Oni? has recently moved to a gorgeous new location in Greenpoint. They serve up traditionaly Japanese food including onigiri, udon, okonimoyaki and takoyaki. Everything here is so delicious! It’s pretty affordable as far as Japenese restaurants in Cape Town go and the atmosphere is wonderful. They are currrently unlicensed so you can bring along a bottle of wine free of charge to enjoy on your date night. On Wednesdays you can find them at @ozcfarm 5PM-9PM.

Una Mas, Sea Point

Una Mas is my favourite Mexican restaurant in Cape Town. It’s taken classic Mexican fare and elevated it to sophisticated Mezcal & Tequila cocktails and trendy small plates. Come and order a few different small plates to share and enjoy all the wonderful flavours. My favourites are the ceviche (out of this world!) and the fish tacos. If you’re looking for a heartier meal they do offer burrito bowls and loaded nachos. End off the evening with one of their decadent churros and chocolate.

Torii @ Tjing Tjing House, Longmarket Street

Torii @ Tjing Tjing House serves up Tokyo street food style dishes. The menu comprises a number of delicious small plates including steamed buns, gyoza and the most delicious okonomiyaki fries slathered in kewpie mayo and topped with bonito flakes, nori & sesame seeds. They also have ramen, bento boxes and donburi for more substantial mains. This is a great date night or family dinner spot if you’re looking to try something new and a little more adventurous. They don’t take reservations so I recommend arriving early. They also have amazing cocktails which can be enjoyed upstairs at the Tjing Tjing Rooftop bar.

If you’re looking for authentic Chinese food to be enjoyed by the whole family look no further than Chuck Yangs in Rondebosch. Order a few main dishes to be shared and take their owner’s lead on how much is enough for your table. The General Chicken is an absolute crowd favourite and they have so many other wonderful dishes to choose from.

Cape Town Foodie Guide: Fine Dining

Grub & Vine, Bree Street

Grub & Vine combines delicious bistro-style cuisine with fine wine. This is a higher end dining experience and great for a celebratory function or special date. When we went we did their summer menu du jour which is R395 pp for Canapés & 2 Courses or R495 pp for Canapés & 3 Courses. Every morsel was exquisite! For a step up you can do their summer tasting menu which starts at R850 pp for 5 courses and increases when you add wine pairings. The ambience is amazing and their service is excellent.
