Best Sunset Spots in Cape Town

There’s really nothing better than watching a beautiful sunset. And it seems that no matter how many sunsets you witness in your lifetime, not one of them is the same as another. It’s one of my favourite parts of Creation!
Cape Town is definitely not short of glorious sunset spots, leaving us spoilt for choice. I’ve put together my list of the Best Sunset Spots in Cape Town to help you in your decision-making for your next sundowner mission.

Planning a trip to Cape Town and need a place to stay? For budget travellers check out Never at Home, Kloof Street. Book a stay at Gorgeous George for beautiful interiors and a funky rooftop bar. Or stay at or Kloof Street Hotel to be in the heart of the city.
Browse Booking.com for countless accommodation options:

The Rock

This sunset spot is one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets so I’m only sharing the details with the few of you who actually read my blog! This sunset spot can be found at the top of Fresnaye, at the end of Ocean View Drive. You can park at the end of Ocean View Drive and then clamber on the rocks to your boulder of choice. You’ll have panoramic views of Clifton, Table Mountain, the 12 Apostles and can see all the way to the Karbonkelberg in Hout Bay.

Tafelberg Road

One of my new favourite places in Cape Town! Tafelberg Road not only boasts gorgeous views of the city during the day but creates the perfect spot to watch Table Mountain and Lion’s Head turn orange at Golden Hour. You can drive to the very end of Tafelberg road (up to where the road is closed off). From here you’ll park your car and walk along Tafelberg Road. We walked for about 800m to where there is a bend in the road followed by a straight. This is a really cool spot to take photos and there’s a spot on the side of the road where you can sit and watch the sun set.

Pipe Track

I have only ever seen the Pipe Track as a walking route or a gateway to the Table Mountain hiking ascents. But the other day I ended up here for sunset and was very impressed with the views on offer. You can walk just along the Pipe Track for about 5 minutes before you’ll see some boulders to your right. Sit here and watch as Lion’s Head lights up and the sky turns to hues of orange, pink and purple. You’ll also have some beautiful views of the 12 Apostles on your left.

Bakoven

Bakoven is not only a gorgeous beach to enjoy a fresh swim and catch some sunshine rays. But as the sun goes down it turns into a stunning spot to watch as dusk rolls in. Find a perch on the boulders between the two beaches and take in the beauty as the sun goes down and the city lights begin to sparkle.

Oudekraal Road

All along the Oudekraal/Atlantic Seaboard road there are plenty of lay-bys where you can pull over, park your car and watch the sunset. Why not drop your car back seats down, load a mattress and pillows into the back of the car and open the boot for your very own comfy sunset spot? Every time I’ve stopped at one of these spots I’ve had lovely whale sightings. So keep your eyes peeled!

Chapman’s Peak

Chapman’s Peak is an el classico Cape Town sunset spot. The scenic drive boasts an abundance of picnic spots and lay-bys for you to stop and enjoy the gorgeous view. If you’re coming from the Hout Bay side you can get a picnic day pass and drive all the way to the day pass turn around point free of charge. From Noordhoek side you can also drive to that point without paying. Pick your picnic table and enjoy the gorgeous view of the sun setting over Hout Bay.

Another sunset spot I’m yet to tick off my Cape Town Sunset list is Kloof Corner at sunset. It’s high up there though! If you’re keen to give it a go, read my Kloof Corner Hike blog post for tips for the hike.
