McGregor is a small town in the winelands of South Africa. Located 15 minutes outside of Robertson, McGregor is a lovely place to stay for a weekend and the perfect springboard to exploring the surrounding winelands. Visiting this one-street town feels like stepping back in time and you are guaranteed to encounter a slower pace here. Read my guide on how to spend a weekend away in McGregor for all the wine tasting, foodie and accommodation recommendations.
The town of McGregor is so small and quaint with a distinct country-living feel to it. The whitewashed houses are accented with colourful shutters and capped with thatch roofs. Along the main street you’ll find bistros, coffee shops, antique stores and the church all covered in pretty flowers. Off the main street the roads are gravel and lead to many secluded guesthouses and accommodation options. We stayed at Rhythm Full On which is a gorgeous Airbnb with two cottages and an eco-pool. Book your stay here. Alternative accommodation options in the town include Lucky Crane Villas, The Barn and 12 On Tindall. Taking a stroll around town is a must during your stay in McGregor to acquaint yourself with the village.
Despite being a part of the winelands, McGregor itself only has one wine farm with wine tasting available: Lord’s Wines. Nestled in the mountains, Lord’s Wines is at the end of the road, the last stop before the mountains. The tasting room offers gorgeous views of the vineyards. Their tasting room is open 7-days a week from 10:00- 16:00. For bookings call 0236251265

After a delightful day out wine tasting you might need a pick me up for the rest of the day. Stop by The Blend in McGregor for a really good coffee.
We didn’t eat here but passed it during our stay and the atmosphere looked amazing. Picture al fresco dining beneath trees lit with fairy lights. It is a little on the pricier side of things so more of a special occasion dinner.
The Fossil Hills Wine Walk includes a 3 day guided moderate experience. The trail will guide you through the beautiful McGregor valley and lead you to several Wine Farms in the area.
Hike a moderate 10-15 km a day with friends or join a group of 6-20 persons and let Fossil Hills do the rest – while you rest! The farm forms part of McGregor Winery and so named after the many ancient fossils found there, as you will be able to see on day 2 and 3 of hiking. I haven’t done this trail but it looks like a wonderful and unique experience.
The Boesmanskloof Overnight Hike is a two day, one night overnight hike from the town of Greyton to a hut in Die Galgs in the mountains above McGregor. The hike is 17km each way and requires a good level of fitness as well as some recent hiking training under your belt. Sections of this trail are very steep and strenuous but not difficult technically. The sheer distance you’ll be covering over the two days is challenging in and of itself. Read my complete guide to the Boesmanskloof Overnight Hike as well as all the details you need to book it here: Boesmanskloof Overnight Hike.
If you don’t want to do the full hike you can do a shorter section from McGregor to the Oakes Falls as a day hike. This is about 12km and starts at Onverwacht in the mountains above McGregor. The hike starts with a sharp decent into the valley after which it flattens out until you get to a waterfall. This is a great point to swim, picnic, relax and then head back. You need permits and they are available from the tourism office in McGregor.
McGregor has so many beautiful accommodation options. We stayed at Rhythm Full On which is a gorgeous Airbnb with two cottages and an eco-pool. Book your stay here.
Alternative accommodation options include Lucky Crane Villas, The Barn, 12 On Tindall which are located in town and Fossil Hills which is a bit out of town and has a hot tub.
