Sunflower Fields at Vergelegen

Sunflower Fields at Vergelegen

Every year Vergelegen Wine Estate in Somerset West invites visitors to experience their famous sunflower field. Blooming during the summer months of January, February, March and April (blooming days vary each year depending on the rains), the sunflower fields at Vergelegen are open for guests to explore. You’re welcome to walk through the fields and take as many photographs as you like. This year the fields have started blooming early January and are likely to bloom for another 2-3 weeks.

Details

Where: Sunflower fields at Vergelegen Wine Estate, Lourensford Road, Somerset West

Price: R10 entrance fee for students, R20 for adults

When: latter summer months

What: Take a walk through the sunflower fields, the various other gardens and enjoy a meal at one of their restaurants

Last year we went on the last weekend of the sunflower season (mid-May, but keep an eye out on their insta page to see when the season is ending) and we were allowed to pick as many sunflowers as we pleased (for free!) as the field was to be mowed over the next day.

This year Vergelegen has created a special sunflower inspired menu for visitors to enjoy when they come to visit the flowers. Visit the Stables Restaurant at Vergelegen for cupcakes (R30), scones with sunflower petal jam & sunflower seed butter (R55), pear & blue cheese salad with toasted sunflower seeds (R85), chicken breast with sunflower and cumin crust on char grilled broccolini (R155), sunflower petal ice cream (R75).

What else?

Vergelegen isn’t just about the sunflower field though as they have 18 gardens, 2 restaurants and a wine tasting facility. There is a cosmos flower field adjacent to the sunflower field which also blooms magnificently during the later summer months. Take a walk through the bamboo forest, rose garden, yellowood walk, hydrangea garden, or lose yourself in the magical Camphor Forest. They also run daily garden tours.

Vergelegen has two restaurants: The Stables Restaurant (more casual) and The Camphors (more upmarket). You can also order a picnic to be enjoyed in the camphor forest.
