Salzburg

After crawling along the mountainside of Czech Republic in our hired car we entered the lusciously green hilled country of Germany.  A few hours of driving took us through Germany and into Austria. We arrived at our hotel just outside of Salzburg, dropped off our bags and went out for supper at Landgasthof Kirchbichl. We ate Cordon Bleus and Wiener Schnitzels. A truly authentic Austrian meal served by a lady dressed in her traditional attire who spoke not a word of English.

The cooler weather allowed for some site seeing in the heart of Salzburg the next day. We walked through the quite streets of this musical town that is centred around ‘The Sound of Music’ and Mozart. We saw Mozart’s birth place and his home. The streets were filled with the melodies of a friendly busker playing the harmonic notes of Mozart on his guitar.

Viewing the sites of the filming of ‘The Sound of Music’ proved to be more hassle-free than expected. The scene where the Van der Trap children are wearing their curtain outfits and singing Do-Re-Mi was filmed in the streets of Salzburg. We saw a fountain, the Mirabellgarten and the Palace Lake; all venues for this particular song in the movie. We climbed the steps to the Nonnberg Abbey which was where all the nunnery scenes were filmed. We were unfortunately not allowed in as there was a Sunday Mass in progress.

The Mirabellgarten with its impeccable gardens is definitely worth a visit while in Salzburg. The flowers were all neatly arranged in swirls and patterns filled with roses, daisies and all sorts of flowers in exotic and astonishing colours. The centre piece is a fountain which spews water in all directions.

We saw the beautiful churches and cathedrals of St Blasius, St Peters and the main Cathedral. All such beautiful buildings with grand histories.

Salzburg is a truly historical and culture filled town.
