Geneva

On Wednesday I was so blessed to be able to have the most wonderful and refreshing day off: a day trip to Geneva, Switzerland. The family gave me a lift into the city which only took 10 minutes by car. It’s really very close and so next time I think I may just cycle there. What I just found so incomprehensible was how incredibly easy it was to just cross from one country to the next. One moment you’re in France, the next you’re in Switzerland.

I began my day at the promenade of Lake Geneva. The beautiful lake was spewing water out from the magnificent Jet d’Eau. The sun had even decided to show up and so a beautiful rainbow formed at the edge of the spray.

I walked around the Jardin Anglais for a little while and found the most incredible thing: a flower clock! It’s literally a clock made out of flowers! You may have noticed how much I love flowers and so you can imagine how happy this discovery made me!

Next I meandered up towards the Old Town where I found the St Pierre’s Cathedral. I hadn’t planned on the spending the 5 euro to climb the towers but I am so glad that I did! It was a bit of a walk but at the top you were left breathless from the panoramic view of Geneva.

Walking through the cobbled streets I found the Promenade de Bastions which is a park with a monument called the Reformation wall. I paused there for a little packed lunch before moving on to the Place de Neuve (an opera house).

By 12:30 I had already achieved everything that I had wanted to for the whole day. With so much extra time I decided that it would be a good time to pay the United Nations a visit. After a gazillion security checks I was finally inside and ready to start the tour. The guide was so informative and just brimming with stats. It was a really enriching and worthwhile experience. I couldn’t believe that I was sitting in the same room that had housed so many decisions in creating world peace. I left inspired to become a diplomat!

It was a really wonderful day and such a treat to be able to visit a world-class city so easily.
