Kogel Bay Camping, South Africa

Kogel bay

Kogel Bay is a beach campsite near Gordon’s Bay, Western Cape. Located just off the beautiful coastal road of Clarens Drive, this magical spot boasts the most incredible views of the Kogelberg mountains and Indian Ocean coastline. You’ll find grassy campsites with either beachfront views or nestled in among the trees for shade and shelter from the wind. It’s the perfect summer spot to park off and enjoy afternoons splashing in the sea, sitting on the beach watching the sunset turn the Kogelberg mountains dusty pink and waking up to the sounds of crashing waves in the morning. Kogel Bay is also the perfect spot to base yourselves if you’re keen to do the Crystal Pools hike in the Steenbras Nature Reserve. Below you’ll find a complete guide to planning your Kogel Bay camping trip.

Facilities

Each Kogel Bay campsite has its own braai area and there are washing up facilities shared between a few campsites. There are no electrical plug points on the campsites. There are a number of communal ablution blocks with showers and toilets (bring your own toilet paper).

The campsite covers a huge area so you’ll have many spots to choose from to pitch your tent. The beach front sites have stunning views but are prone to catching the wind, while the sites nestled in the trees are shady and more sheltered, but don’t always have a view of the sea.

Kogel Bay camping is only a 45 minute drive from Cape Town making it the perfect weekend getaway spot.

The beauty of Kogel Bay is truly remarkable and you’ll find your breath being taken away on a number of occasions. The mountains are magnificent, the beach seemingly endless and the sunsets pure magic. It’s a really special place and I’m very excited to go back one day for another Kogel Bay camping trip.

Disclaimer: We were here on one of the windiest weekends of the year. We battled the howling gale trying to keep our tents down and not eat mouthfuls of sand. We ended up leaving a day early after a miserable and sleepless night. I can speak from personal experience and say that if the wind is due to blow, your weekend will be compromised. So check the forecast in advance and make alternative arrangements if need be. Also baboons are notorious for visiting the campsite so be sure keep your food safely secured and put away (in a locked tent or car).
