Prague
After 24 long hours of flying, sleeping in airports and taking transfers, we eventually arrived at our accommodation in Prague, U Čtyř Andělů. A lovely spacious apartment which was very cool and thus a relief from the smoking 37 degrees outside.
We immediately hit the cobbled streets of this ornate city and admired the beauty of the buildings on the way to lunch. The buildings are absolutely breath taking in their beauty and age. The odd thing is that they are all covered in graffiti. Prague was oppressed for a number of years and so when they achieved freedom the youth went about expressing themselves through the rebellion of graffiti. An odd concept to grasp but is amazing in its own way.
We dined at U Fleků which is an authentic microbrewery, for lunch. We had beef goulash with bread and speck dumplings. We were serenaded by a lovely accordion player. A true Czech experience!
The Vlata River is the centre of the city and features over 15 bridges, each having a story of their own. Charles Bridge being the most famous one. It has many stores along it selling curios, jewellery, paintings and caricatures. You have a beautiful view of the Prague Castle from the bridge and is any photographers dream.
On the way home we stopped by a bakery and bought apple strudel, pretzels and other pastries for our breakfast the next day.
We dined at a lovely Italian restaurant and had the most delectable and massive pizzas. ‘Ristorante Adriatico’ was a truly amazing experience for me.
Charles Bridge at night is another experience altogether. As is the rest of Europe I suppose. The lights were shining and just gave the entire city a lovely romantic feeling.
The next day we woke to the soft murmur of the lively city that beckoned us. We caught a tram to the Prague Castle. The tram ride was fabulous as we managed to see most of Prague from a different angle. This angle also involved less walking and so everyone was happy. The Prague Castle is made up of many courtyards, each featuring their own church or cathedral. The St. Vitus Cathedral had to have been the most beautiful and opulent building I have ever set eyes on. It is massive and truly takes architecture to a new level. The gates are laced in gold and one side depicts the scene of the crucifixion entirely out of mosaic. An absolutely breath taking structure which led my finger to be constantly on the capture button of my camera.
At noon on the dot we watched the prestigious formality of the changing of the guards at the Castle. There was a whole ceremony with marching and music.
The main courtyard then facilitated the most magnificent view of the whole of Prague. There were red roofs and spires for miles around. The most picturesque and panoramic view.
In the evening we made our way toward Wencelas Square in the New Town. The streets are wider and the shops and restaurants are more commercial. We had a typical hot dog from a street vendor. The sausage being a Wencelas sausage. We then watched a show at the Image Theatre. This theatre uses the technique of the Black Light Theatre. This technique involves mime, dancing and illusion and thus has no language barriers. It was a fantastic show and an incredible experience.
We then walked to the Old Town Square which features the famous Astronomical Clock and the Old Town Hall. An ornately beautiful part of the town and filled with many festive tourists. It was a joyful and vibey area.
This city never sleeps and is filled to the brim with the joys of love and life. It definitely rates as my favourite European city thus far.
